Record Number of Democrats Running in Martin County

Nearly 100 Democrats packed the Stuart Woman’s Club at the August 6 Candidates Forum sponsored by the Martin County Democratic Club and Democratic Women’s Club.

Candidate Forum

Jackie Williams with Adam Fetterman and Bill Ramos, candidates for Florida House District 81 and Catherine Hilton, candidate for House District 82

Moderator Jackie Williams asked the candidates for their opinions on how to make Martin County a better place to live.

The two Democratic candidates for Florida House District 81 had various opinions. Bill Ramos suggested that a repeal of 100 special interest tax exemptions would bring about increased funding for programs, while Adam Fetterman said that this idea would not work because most of the tax exemptions are for necessary items and he would oppose their repeal.

The candidates for County Commission were primarily quizzed on growth and issues involving the County’s future. Each of them said they would favor a slow growth position and had different ideas on how to achieve that. Among the Democratic Commission candidates were Dr. Tom Fullman and Eric Brent, candidates for District 1; Martha Bennett, candidate for District 3; and Linda Green, candidate for District 5. This is the first time in many years that there have been so many Democrats running for the Martin County Commission!

Catherine Hilton, Democratic candidate for Florida House District 82 and Don Chinquina, candidate for Public Defender, gave their ideas on issues regarding the law and state legislative matters.

The Democratic Club meets every first Wednesday at 6:30 pm at the Stuart Woman’s Club, 729 East Ocean Blvd. For information call (772) 286-1281.
