850 workers to be hired in Treasure Coast with $16 million in stimulus money

- Treasure Coast employers are poised to hire 850 workers as part of a federal economic stimulus package.
Workforce Solutions, the non-profit organization that helps job seekers find jobs, said it received $16 million through the Florida Back to Work program.
The money will pay employers to hire workers through September. The positions range from entry-level jobs to higher-paid posts, but salaries top out at $40,000, said Workforce Solutions head Gwenda Thompson.
About 145 employers in Martin, St. Lucie, Indian River and Okeechobee counties have said they'll hire workers through the program.
To register for the program, job seekers should visit a Workforce Solutions office, Thompson said. The organization's offices are listed at www.yourworkforcesolutions.com.
To be hired through the program, job seekers must have at least one child under 18 and a household income below twice the federal poverty level for the past 30 days. That translates to $3,675 for a family of four.
Martin County unemployment was 13.6 percent in January, while St. Lucie County had a 14.9 percent jobless rate, third-highest among the state's 67 counties. In Palm Beach County, Workforce Alliance said it has received up to $27 million to hire 700 workers.
