Republican & Hypocrisy: You won't find one without the other

Martin County Democrats

Where is the RNC’s outrage over Karl Rove’s racism?

The Republican National Committee went wild when Howard Dean made a joke about minorities holding low-paying jobs in America (and his joke was intended to show how open the Democratic party is to minorities), but suddenly when Karl Rove makes a comment that isn’t a joke at all about Mexicans working low-paying jobs (the comment was meant to demean the kind of work Mexicans do), suddenly the corporate media and the Republican party aren’t making such a big fuss. Howard Dean needed to make his mea culpa, so where is the White House’s?

Interesting, isn’t it, how a double standard seems to apply in American politics? If you’re a Republican, you can demean a racial or ethnic group outright, and no one can or will say “Boo”. God help you if you’re a Democrat, though, and you happen to make a comment that, even tangentially, can be twisted, massaged, and propagandized into something even minimally racially disparaging. Republicans, desperate enough to grab onto anything they can twist to their advantage, absolutely savaged Howard Dean for remarks that were intended to demonstrate that the Democratic Party is open to minorities. That there was nothing derogatory or overtly racial about Dean’s remarks was beside the point. There was enough for Republican trolls like Ken Mehlman and Sean Hannity to vent their manufactured outrage against Dean. The Mainstream Media picked it up and ran with up, and Voila!!…Howard Dean became a racist.

If you want you can compare the remarks for yourself:

Howard Dean (comparing the Democratic and Republican parties on inclusiveness):

"You think the Republican National Committee could get this many people of color in a single room? Only if they had the hotel staff in here."

Karl Rove (talking about the immigration debate):

"I don't want my 17-year-old son to have to pick tomatoes or make beds in Las Vegas."

Hypocrisy, thou art a Republican….

After savaging Dean for his alleged racism, you’d think that Republicans would be taking Rove to task for his overt racism. If you’re waiting for that to happen, I’d strongly suggest not holding your breath. How can Rove’s comment be racist, when the GOP is the “Big Tent Party”? What they don’t tell you, though, is that the only way minorities will find themselves under the tent roof is if they’re the ones serving the drinks and canapes.

Thanks to The People's Republic of Seabrook:
"No matter how cynical you become, it's impossible to keep up"
