Boy nearly drowns at Bathtub Reef Park on Hutchinson Island

By Gabriel Margasak staff writer April 5, 2005

HUTCHINSON ISLAND - The 7-year-old boy was just "bobbing" in the waves Monday at Bathtub Reef Park - and then he stopped breathing.
Lifeguards James "Jimbo" Shipes, John Handlen and Jeff Callahan pulled the boy from the water and started CPR with a nurse who stopped to help.
"We got him back," the veteran Martin County guard said. "Believe me, as a lifeguard, there's no better feeling than that."
The boy was taken to a local hospital; his condition was not available Monday night.
Rescue officials said it was a good save for Shipes and lifeguards John Handlen and Jeff Callahan.
In Monday's incident shortly before 5 p.m., the boy drifted south between the reef and the beach, a normally shallow sandbar. But the tides can create deceptive dropoffs that are especially dangerous for small children.
The boy was still moving, but Shipes' trained eyes told him something was wrong. He hit the water.
"When I picked him up, that's when he seemed to go limp," Shipes said.
Guards estimated the child was not breathing and had no pulse for about 10 to 15 seconds. They stared CPR.
"I looked at him, and let me tell you, he was doing a lot better when he started coughing up water and crying," Shipes said.
